You say that big is beautiful
That it's the new 'in thing'
You talk about how nice I'd look
If only I weren't thin
But will you come to realise
That it really isn't right
To say that we're not big enough
And take our name in spite?

You may have gotten insults
From some idiotic men
But when you call us skin and bones
You're just as bad as them
To say that big is beautiful
Is fine and true to say
To say that big is better
Is to think a hateful way

Nothing's better, nothing's 'right'
We're built to look unique
To say we're pretty, big and skinny
That's the peace I seek
It's easier to get along
When we're not starting fights
To see the wars of big vs skinny
Aren't such pretty sights

So lets find a happy medium
To stop this pointless hate
Let's have respect for everyone
No matter what their weight
And when we all abide by this
We'll see what happens then
A world full of less hate and fear
And more friendship again
A lot of the time I see my friends on facebook sharing pictures with little phrases like 'real women have curves' and 'bigger is better' and it really gets to me. I know a lot of people are ridiculed for their weight or appearance but to insult other people because of it doesn't help anyone. Saying things like 'it's better to be big than be a stick insect' is just as bad as the people that say 'thin people are hotter than big people'. Just because you're big doesn't mean you're better than other people, and the same applies to being thin.

I can definitely relate with this poem because it reminds me of mistakes I made in the same vogue. And honestly, even though I meant well, I do feel that saying something about someone's weight or someone's physical features is unacceptable for the same reason that it can go against us. And I agree, it is a rightful taboo - we should know where we stand and we must accept that for a fact and admittedly, its the right thing to do.

I think society is what has ruined us. There is no "big" and there is no "small". As long is someone is the healthy weight for their body type, I think its great. I have a friend who's a dancer and she's naturally small and petite, and I myself am a swimmer so I've got a larger body. Doesn't mean she's anorexic or that I'm fat. I think you're portraying a great image people should follow. Its never fair to judge others only on weight.

I've been my whole life overweight (due to my sickness. My family is full of marathon runners.) and in past few years I've lost a lot of weight by exercise. One day while running I realised that no matter how much I run and I lose weight, there will be people who think I'm disgusting. If I'm overwight, some people regard me as ugly. If I'm thin, there will be people who hate me for being thin. But I didn't stop running, on the contrary, I smiled at the thought. I don't run or lose weight anymore for being prettier in other people's eyes: I want to run because I like it and it makes me feel strong and beautiful. This poem reminded me of that realisation and decision. Thank you. You made my day a little brighter.

Yes and its like the creepy fixation on someone's body, like they feel the need to insult you whether your skinny, or fat. And its still like focusing on the appearance I guess, like the body is how you judge a person (if that makes sense).

I hate being big. Fat people get made fun of quite often. I've tried diet after diet and exercise but I can't seem to get my weight back down right down....to be honest I know you're supposed to love who you are but I don't. I also know the opposite is true, skinny girls who are just naturally thin are called anorexic and other stupid things even though they are healthy and can't help the way they were built. Same woth bigger people. people automatically assume a person is fat because they eat too much, but you dont know that. I have a friend who is overweight because she will very ill and had to be put on steroids, which blew her up. There are also people on both ends who just don't take care of themselves too, which causes stereotypes on both ends. But you have to admit, society sets a certain image on how women should look, skinny. And it makes people like me insecure.

But I see what you mean. We should be accepting of all shapes and sizes, but unfortunately people are too shallow to do so. :/

I agree that putting someone else down to feel better about yourself isn't any good. But I do think health is a factor to beauty. Someone far overweight or far underweight tend to be less attractive to the average person. Which is not to say they don't deserve someone who loves them the way they are, but I do think there is nothing wrong with favouring a weight that is healthy.

I really like the message of this poem a lot. And sadly this is how society thinks, you have to look a certain way to be considered pretty. For me I've always been insulted regardless of size. Am pressured to be thick and skinny... something I can't be because my body doesn't allow it lol but am content how I look overall

This piece would be perfect for a project we are developing -- an online gallery for artists who have been bullied or who explore the theme of bullying in their work. It's called the You Will Rise Project. Check it out here: [link] and read the "Submit Work" section for details about sharing your work on our site. Thanks!

Very true. I am a sort of ambivalent weight, so I defiantly know how it feels to be "critiqued" on body size. A great message, and beautifully written.

I know that, more often than not, the way society works is that there has to be a period of extremism before middle-ground can be reached... but I agree with you: I wish we were already at the happy medium. It isn't that JUST big is better or smaller is more attractive or whatever, it's that ALL people are beautiful. "We're all skeletons in the end," as Sam said in a poem I wrote awhile ago. This poem is a good expression of those thoughts, equating the stratification of value to a war between extremes. We just need to be friends, like you said!

I'll never understand why some people think it's acceptable to just walk up and critique another person's body, like we're all just items begging to be corrected and improved. I'm especially baffled when total strangers do this. It seems to mostly happen to women, and then we wonder why so many girls have body issues. So, yeah, this piece resonated with me. I was teased for being "anorexic" as a teenager, and it hurt. Then people told me I'd "filled out," and it hurt. Then people said I'd "lost weight" and "looked good," and it hurt. And on and on. People need to just stop. We're all human. We're all different. And that's how it's supposed to be. Critiquing someone's body, whether you mean it as an insult, a compliment, or constructive criticism (FFS) is nasty.

I agree, it's just ridiculous. I'm sorry for what you've been through, I sort of understand 'cause my mum used to have anorexia . People just need to learn that it's pointless to judge others by their appearance. Your size doesn't depict whether you're a nice person or not, so why are people so fixated on it?

Fortunately, I never actually had anorexia. People just used it as some kind of insult, I guess. I have had friends who struggled with eating disorders, though, and I know from them that ANY comment on their body size, no matter how complimentary, tended to trigger them. It's sad how often it happened to them, too, from people who honestly thought they were being helpful.

Oh wow, I can actually relate with this on a different level. Always used to hate it when people said I was too skinny, even if it wasn't necessarily intended as an insult. People should definitely learn to look past a person's size, because it really has nothing to do with the person inside.

Lovely job on the poem; the rhythm works really well and you get your point down in a concise way. Favourite bit was probably the second half of the second stanza. :)

Same here, a lot of people seem to think that because you're not big then it's okay to comment on or criticize your weight. Like if you're not overweight then you can't possibly be offended :/

Thank you very much :)

I love this. people have learned to love themselves but hate others, such as big is bigger is better or im not short im fun size. one time i said "even though im tall im still fun size" and they just said "no you cant be, your godzilla". why cant we all love eachother as much as we love ourselves?
